FRANK B AUSTIN DIES AT RESIDENCE
Veteran of Confederate War Succumbs After Long and Useful Life
After a long and useful life Frank B Austin, a well known Columbian and Confederate veteran, died yesterday morning at his residence at 2211 Park Street.
Mr Austin was 76 years old, having been born April 10, 1844. As a lad he enlisted in the Confederate army. Beginning his service April 1861, shortly after war was declared and serving with distinction throughout the continuance of hostilities. He was a gallant soldier, true to every tradition of the South, a worthy follower of his great commander, "Stonewall" Jackson, his company F Twelfth South Carolina Infantry, Metiowan's [? spelling?] Brigade, being a part of Jackso's corps. Mr Austin was wounded at the battle of the Wilderness.
His comrades of Camp Hampton, UCV, deploring his passing, yesterday paid a simple tribute to his memory, eulogizing him as "a brave soldier, true gentleman, who lived and fought for what he thought was right - a gentleman of the Old South, whose civilization is "as sweet as remembered kisses after death."
Mr Austin was a faithful and consistent member of the Arsenal Hill Presbyterian church, serving well his God, his country, and his church.
Mr Austin is survived by his widow and one son, Wallace Austin, both of Columbia.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the residence on Park Street. Interment to be in the Aimwell Presbyterian churchyard, Fairfield county.
