Theodore Henry Schmidt and his wife, Anna (Combs Brooks), together with their four children, immigrated to America from Germany departing from Antwerp, Belgium on Wednesday, the 25th of June in 1890 aboard the steamship, Belgenland, arriving two weeks later on the 9th of July in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Theodore, a locksmith by trade, was then 37 years old. He and his wife and children, Anna (aged 35), Joseph (aged 11-3/4), Henrich (aged 10-3/4), Wilhelm (aged 4), and Anton (an infant) were destined for Moscow, Idaho.

The Schmidt family settled about 100 miles south of Moscow and eight miles north of the Salmon River, in the small, thriving German Catholic community of Keuterville, Idaho County, Idaho where they farmed on the Camas Prairie. Here, on the 7th of September of 1891, their daughter Mary Anna was born, and three years later on the 15th of September 1894, their son Theodore Henry was born.

Theodore and his sons learned English quickly, and in 1897 he and Joseph became naturalized citizens. Anna died when she was about 40 years old, sometime after the birth of Theodore Henry and prior to the 1900 census (taken on the 7th and 8th of June), leaving Theodore a widower with six children. In the 1900 census, Theodore is listed as a farmer and Joseph a farm laborer. While Wilhelm and Anton, both students, were also living with him, the whereabouts of Henrich is unknown.

The two youngest children stayed with other families in Keuterville. In the 1900 census, Theodore Henry is listed as the "ward" of Bernard Bosse (b. 1839). Bernard and his wife, Marie Gertrude Anna (Bredemann) (b. before 1854), were both born in Osnabruck, Niedersachsen, Germany and immigrated to America in 1869 and 1870, settling first in Lively Grove, Washington County, Illinois. In September of 1888, the Bosse family had a sale, disposed of their goods, and and moved to Keuterville. Their daughter Anna (b. 18 Feb 1873 in Lively Grove) and her husband, Bernard Henrich Anton "Barney" Micke (b. 1865 in Ludinghausen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany), became the "adopted" parents of Theodore's daughter, Mary.

After the death of Anna, Theodore never remarried, but continued to live in Keuterville with his children until they started families of their own.

By 1903, Theodore had established rights to homestead on the land he was farming. On 10 Nov 1903 the United States Government granted him a patent to 160 acres in the southeast quarter of Section 24 in Township 31 North of Range 2 West. This township overlooks a section of the Salmon River known as Hell's Canyon. Two years later, on 27 Dec 1905, Joseph was granted a patent for 80 acres on adjoining property in the south half of the northeast quarter of the same section, and on 18 June 1908, he was granted another 80 acres in the east half of the southwest quarter in Section 34 in Township 32N of Range 1W. Henry was granted a patent for 80 acres on 3 Nov 1913 in the west half of the northwest quarter of Section 13 in Township 31N of Range 1W. Together the family farmed nearly 500 acres around Keuterville.

Having established themselves in the community, the Schmidt children started to begin families of their own. The eldest son of Theodore and Anna, Joseph (b. Dec 1877 in Germany), called "Joe," married Theresa (b. 1889 in Montana), the eldest daughter of John Maugg, Keuterville's blacksmith and owner of the Maugg Hotel, on 12 Jun 1906. Where they lived in 1910 is uncertain, but by 1920 they moved to 537 East Wabash in Spokane where they lived with their sons Adolph, (b. 1910), Louis, (b. 1913), and Clarence, (b. 19 Jan 1915). Joseph died on the 25th of September 1924 in Spokane and is buried in Fairmount Cemetery.

Henrich (b. about Dec 1879 in Germany), called "Henry," married Rose Schindler (b. 1886 in Illinois) in 1906. They lived in Keuterville until sometime before 1920 and then moved to Clayton, Stevens County, Washington where they stayed for about twenty years and raised their children: Henry J. (b. 1906), Andrew (b. 1912), Elizabeth (b. 1919), Joseph (b. 1922) and Mary (b. 1928).

Wilhelm Michael (b. 2 Feb 1886 in Germany), called both "William" and "Willie, married Anna Zellerhoff (b. 22 Nov 1899 in Colton, Whitman County, Washington), on the 29th of June 1915 in Colton. The young couple lived in Joseph, Wallowa County, Oregon where the first three of their children were born: James Bernard (b. 26 Apr 1916), Laura Margaret (b. 27 Apr 1917), and William Joseph (b. 15 Feb 1919. By 1920, the family moved to Uniontown, Whitman County, Washington where the rest of their children were born: Leo John (b. 22 Jan 1921), Elmer Joseph(b. 7 Dec 1922), Bernard Leroy (b. 20 May 1924), Mary Adeline (b. 18 Jan 1926), Lawrence A. (b. 1928), and Clara Margaret (b. 22 Nov 1932).

In 1910 Thedore was living in Keuterville with his son, William, and reunited with his two youngest children, Mary and Ted.

Anton (b. 5 Oct 1889 in Germany), called "Anthony," married Elizabeth Clara Johansen Weiber (b. 29 Aug 1893 in Whitman County, Washington) on the 25th of November 1915 at St. Anthony's Church in Spokane, Washington. They lived two blocks away from Joseph's family at 318 East Wabash where they raised their two sons, Lawrence Anthony (b. 23 Aug 1916) and John Edward (b. 6 Jun 1919) and daughter, Frances R. (b. 8 Apr 1922).

Theodore and Anna's only daughter,
Mary Anna
(b. 7 Sept 1891 in Keuterville), married Thomas Dziuk (b. 1883 in Minnesota) on the 18th of October 1911 at St. Anne's Church in Spokane. They lived at 538 Queen Avenue with their children, Agnes (b. 1913), Clara (b. 1915), and James (b. 1920).

Theodore Henry
(b. 15 Sep 1894 in Keuterville), called "Ted," was the youngest of Theodore and Anna's children. On the 5th of June 1913, when he registered for the draft for World War I, Ted worked on a farm in Joseph, Oregon. Five years later, the Wallona County Reporter posted an announcement that on 15 June 1918, Theodore Schmidt and Miss Marion Barnes, both of Joseph, were quietly married with Rev. F. R. Sibley, a Methodist minister, officiating. They moved to Enterprise, Oregon and lived there until her death at age sixty seven on 30 January 1934. While married to Marion, the couple changed their surname to "Smith." On the 22nd of June 1935, Ted married a divorcee, Minnie Belle Clark Morgan in Walla Walla, Washington. (The marriage record indicates both had been married twice previously.)

By 1920, Theodore moved to Spokane, Washington, where he lived with his son Anton and his family. It was here that Theodore died on Saturday the 12th of October 1929 at the age of 76 and was buried the following Tuesday at Fairmount Cemetery. At the time of death, Theodore was survived by five of his six children and sixteen grandchildren.
