Mr. Aschbacher died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.

Joe H. Aschbacher was born Aug. 8, 1910, in Elida to Bertha and Joseph Aschbacher. He was raised in Elida and graduated from high school there in 1929.

On Dec. 25, 1932, he marred Leona Davis. They homesteaded in the Corona area and made their home there for a short time before moving to Elida, where they lived for several years. During that time, Mr. Aschbacher ran a general mercantile store and farmed west of Elida on his family's homestead.

They moved to Carlsbad in 1949. While living here, Mr. Aschbacher farmed, ran a furniture store, and ran a motel at various times.

In 1953, he began a contracting business, which he continued to do wherever he lived until about 1980.

Mr. Aschbacher was a member of the Church of God, and, during the early 1950s, he began pastoring in addition to his other work. He pastored at churches in New Mexico, Utah and West Texas until the mid 1970s. He was set forth as a bishop in 1958.

Mr. Aschbacher moved back to Carlsbad in 1976.

His wife preceded him in death on April 12, 1992. On Oct. 24, 1992, he married Vina Jane Russell in Portales. They made their home part time in Carlsbad and part time in Portales until 1994 when they settled in Portales.

Mr. Aschbacher attended the Church of God in Portales.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.
