Add PhotosA Baptist congregation arose in Phoenixville around the year 1830, and in 1833, a church was built and a churchyard burial ground was contemporaneously laid out beside the structure. The church was officially incorporated as the Baptist Church of Phoenixville in 1840.
Enlarged in 1853, expansion of the church began putting a squeeze on the remaining space in its burial ground, and the final straw came late in the 1860s, when the Morris Cemetery Company was organized and the Borough of Phoenixville passed an ordinance prohibiting burials within its limits. By the early 1870s, the church began exploring options to remove their dead and use the burial ground for other purposes. In May, 1871, an act of legislature empowered the church's trustees to take up the the remains not otherwise removed by their families and reinter them at Morris Cemetery.
In 1875, the church had embarked on the construction of a parsonage next to the church, and so began the process of clearing the burial ground. Some families did indeed elect to remove their loved ones elsewhere, some, for example, to the Hill Church in East Vincent Township.
A larger church and a parking lot were eventually constructed over the old burial ground; no trace remains today of the old churchyard, and the church building now houses the GraceCrossing Community Church.
