Add PhotosThe Presbyterians, having formed an organization in the Mennonite meeting house, in 1846, built a handsome church, on Main Street, south of Washington Avenue, which was dedicated September 30, 1850 as the First Presbyterian Church of Phoenixville. At that time, they laid out a graveyard around the church for the interment of their dead.
The graveyard was used through the mid-1860s, when the Phoenixville Borough Council outlawed burials within borough limits. In 1882, the church trustees gave notice "to all persons having friends or relatives buried in the First Presbyterian church-yard of Phœnixville, Pa., to have the same removed on or before the 1st day of October, 1882, as the congregation desires to erect a parsonage thereon." Families removed their dead elsewhere, with those unclaimed remains likely going to nearby Morris Cemetery.
