A short history of a repurposed Pioneer cemetery.
In 1639 a colonial outpost in Massachusetts was established called Lynn Village or Lynn's End. As the number of farmers settling from Lynn (6 miles East) and Salem (9 miles North East) increased the settlement according to legend was reorganized by Deacon Thomas Parker. The settlement's new name was Reading and the settlement's first cemetery later known as the "First Old Burial Ground" was established.
However as the decades passed the tombstones only were relocated to the Old Burying Ground, not the graves and the site was renamed the Lower Common. Then the settlement of Reading subdivided and became three separate towns. The oldest part of the settlement was renamed Wakefield and the other two sections became Reading and South Reading.
Today the graves of many of the areas pioneers are buried under and around Wakefield's bandstand on the Lower Common.
