Add PhotosThe La Salle Mission Cemetery was located at the NE corner of Wenzel Rd. and Chartres St. (formerly Airport Rd.), in La Salle, La Salle County, Illinois. In use from 1840-1857, it was the resting place for German and Irish pioneers and immigrants, many of whom died from cholera.
At some point, the section on which the cemetery was located was sold by a Catholic priest. The City of La Salle acquired the cemetery and it was later sold to a veterinarian, who was unaware of the land's original purpose and had intent to build a clinic at the location.
A controversial decision was made and archaeologists laboriously excavated the La Salle Mission Cemetery graves. On April 28, 2012, the disinterred remains and artifacts were removed to Saint Vincent Cemetery, 371 N 2979th Rd. (at the SE intersection with St. Vincent Ave.), La Salle, where a monument marks the new mass grave. Subsequently, a veterinary hospital was built on the original site of the defunct La Salle Mission Cemetery.
