Add PhotosThe plantation home was situated in a large grove of oaks, and the family cemetery is about 400-500 yards to the north of the remains of the house, which burned in 1924. There are no standing grave markers in this cemetery.
In 1930, Wade Cothran Harrison, a great-nephew of Samuel Perrin II (1818-1880), wrote "THE FAMILY CEMETERY IS NEAR THE HOME SITE, AND THOSE KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN BURIED THERE ARE SAMUEL PERRIN (1770-1828) AND HIS WIFE EUNICE CHILES PERRIN; SAMUEL PERRIN (1818-1880) AND HIS FIRST WIFE, EMMA BLOCKER PERRIN AND HIS SECOND WIFE, JULIA QUARLES PERRIN; GEORGE GALPHIN. THERE ARE OTHERS BUT THEIR NAMES ARE NOT KNOWN. THERE ARE NO MARKERS." (Cothran-Chiles Notes, pg. 495)
Unfortunately, several memorials have been created in this cemetery for persons who are either NOT buried here, or very unlikely to have been buried here.
In 1998 Wade Cothran Harrison's son, Francis E. Harrison, then owner of the property, kindly took me to the site of the old cemetery and the remains of the plantation house.
On the east side of the road, one-half mile north of the "Perrin Place" was the plantation known as "Cotton Level", owned by Thomas Chiles Perrin, Samuel's brother. The overseer's house is still standing and in recent years was operated as a privately owned hunting lodge.
