Add PhotosThe Metropolitan Tabernacle of Mexico City, constructed from 1749 to 1760 and situated east of the cathedral, is a Baroque marvel designed by Lorenzo Rodríguez. This grand edifice, fashioned in red tezontle stone and white chiluca stone in the shape of a Greek cross, served multiple purposes: housing the archbishop's archives and vestments, and acting as the site for Eucharistic reservation and communion.
Adorned with intricate Churrigueresque elements, its facades depict religious imagery, biblical narratives, and symbolic motifs like the rampant lion and the royal eagle. Niches, cherubs, and symbolic representations such as clusters of grapes and pomegranates adorn the exterior, showcasing a rich Baroque style. Internally, the tabernacle features chiluca and tezontle stone cladding, with a central nave leading to the principal altar. The eastern nave holds offices and a sacristy, enclosed by walls from the inner temple, while the western nave houses the baptistery.
