The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven, located in Mexico City's historic center, is the principal cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico. Its construction spanned nearly 250 years, resulting in a blend of architectural styles, including Gothic, Baroque, Churrigueresque, and Neoclassical. This cathedral has played a pivotal role in Mexican history, witnessing significant events such as coronations, the preservation of remains of historical figures, and conflicts related to church-state separation.
The cathedral boasts impressive dimensions, with two bell towers, a central dome, and four facades adorned with statues and columns. Inside, it features numerous chapels dedicated to different saints, ornate altars, sculptures, and two large 18th-century organs. A crypt beneath the cathedral houses the remains of former archbishops. Despite enduring damage over the centuries, including a fire in 1967, extensive restoration work has preserved this historic monument, safeguarding it from structural issues caused by the soft clay soil upon which it stands.
