Bethel Chapel was one of the original Wesleyan New Connexion Methodist Churches. The simple, white frame structure, erected in 1853, stands on property once owned by John Prudham (Memorial #117810262) who settled there in 1844 and who provided the land for the church and cemetery.
The timbers for the church were provided by William Bousfield. Inside the chapel are seen the original old wood stove, the original pulpit with its hinged doors on both sides and the original seats which at one time had been taken to the Kilbride Community Hall, itself an old church, but which now have been returned to their rightful place.
This cemetery has also been known as the Canadian Wesleyan New Connexion Methodist Cemetery. The earliest interment recorded on a monument is that of Jonithan Dawson, 1764 - Aug 14, 1845 who emigrated to Canada in 1816 from Newcastle-on-Tyne.
The Cemetery Board has a plot plan showing only the ownership of the lots; there are no known burial lists.
A memorial service is held annually on the first Sunday in September to remember the pioneer settlers of Nelson and other north Burlington residents buried in the cemetery.
