"BARROW COUNTY Georgia CEMETERIES"
Compiled by EAST GEORGIA GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY. 2000
Old Midway Methodist Church Cemetery is located behind the George Rooks Farm. The farm is located at the SW corner of Kilcrease Road and GA-316. Richard D. Winn who wrote about churches in Flanigan's "History of Gwinnett County, VOl. II, pp 247-255, states that the church was organized about 1813. By 1836, Midway Church had moved to its present location at the corner of Kilcrease Road and Brown Bridge Road. Myldred Flanigan speculates that perhaps some of the members did not want to move, remained at the old church and changed its name to Corinth. (Flanigan, page 190). We know that the present Midway United Methodist Church continued to bury their members at Old Midway as late as 1864 because Jarvis Etheridge, Civil War Soldier, was buried there.
The cemetery is 1/4 to 1/2 acre in size and contains 40 to 50 graves. It has been said that Mr. Rooks maintained the cemetery as long as he was able.
The only readable marker here is that of W. M. Rakestraw.
According to Doratheen and Nomie Etheridge, their great-grandfather Shepherd Etheridge is buried here. They showed the Society the location of the cemetery. Doratheen said she used to go with her father Hiram Etheridge, to visit his grandfather.
In the "History of Auburn and Carl", Myldred Hutchins states that Jarvis Etheridge was buried here, but his marker was later moved to the present Midway Cemetery and placed beside his wife's grapve. (p. 188.)
It is believed that Sarah Rebecca Aiken Wages, first wife of Joel Wages, is buried here. He is buried at the present Midway Cemetery. (The Rebecca Elerson Wages who is buried near him is his daughter-in-law and the first wife of John James Wages.)
(WAGES, Sarah Rebecca Aiken, 1804 - c. 1859.)
DIRECTIONS TO THE CEMETERY FROM THE BOOK.
From the SW corner of Kilcrease Road and GA-316, take the service road that runs west and parallel to GA-316. Drive to the end of the road (2/10 mi.) and go back 237 ft. There is a faint path where a cedar tree, pine tree and sycamore (?) tree grow together. The cemetery is about 105 yds. down the path.
