Sortore Cemetery
Friendship, Allegany County, New York, USA
Cemetery History: Sortore Cemetery one of the oldest cemeteries in the county. There are about 24 stones visible, only a handful are legible, and many are in delicate condition. An old handwritten paper in the historians office notes that there are two civil war veterans buried at Sortore Cemetery. Henry Sortore's headstone is clearly readable, as well as the metal plate placed on it by the DAR identifying him as a Soldier of the Revolutionary War. The cemetery has been cleaned up and is being maintained.
Town of Friendship History: The town's name was adopted to mark the resolution of earlier conflicts. The region was first settled around 1806. Originally, the town gained the name of "Bloody Corners" due to the high incidence of feuding. The Town of Friendship was formed in 1815 from part of the Town of Caneadea. Later, new towns were formed from parts of Friendship: Cuba (1822), Bolivar (1825) and a part of Wirt (1838).
