The Holbert Cemetery was established in 1879. William placed aside a little more than one acre of his land for its purpose. The cemetery is exclusive to the Holbert family and all descendants.
William was buried here upon his death in 1889, as are his two wives. His monument can not be missed in his cemetery. A large 20 ft tall monument 4-5 ft. square at its base and tapering to about 15 inches square at the top.
a fence made of stone posts and iron bars surround the cemetery. Built to last, 59 of these posts are 5 by 10 inches with 5 feet above and 5 feet below the ground. Six larger post used for the 4 corners of the cemetery and 2 for the gates are 12 inches square. These post extend 6 feet above and 6 feet below the ground. The gates are also made of iron.
Above the gated entrance is a large steel and aluminum sign donated by a long time family friend in 1985. The donor, George Neilson had the sign constructed by his company Neilson Brothers Inc. plant in Brooklyn, NY. Mr. Neilson for many years, rented a camp on the Delaware River from a Holbert family member. In his honor a small brass plaque was permanently installed at the gate entrance.
I have been working on my Holbert Family history for many years now and hoping to document more info to this cemetery as I add to the family history book. I'm hoping relatives will come across this cemetery on findagrave and contact me in the hopes of sharing more information. - Janet Hickey
