Accident Fatal To Two People

Vehicle After Collision Monday

Two people were killed early Monday afternoon as the result of a collision between a foreign made pickup truck and a car at the intersection one mile west of Prairie Street on Lakeside Road.

Lyon County Sheriff Daniel R. Andrews identified the victims as Willard W. Fowler, 62, Rt. 2, and Hulda L. Richard, 75, 205 State St. He said that the two were occupants of the pickup truck, which came to rest on its top in a flooded slough after the crash.

Harold G. Lingenfelter, Southgate Mobile Home Park, the driver of the car involved in the collision, sustained cuts on his head and arms and bruises to both knees in the crash.

Sheriff Andrews said that investigation of the accident indicated that the truck, apparently driven by Mr. Fowler, drove into the path of the Lingenfelter car from an unmarked county gravel road as the Lingenfeltner vehicle was eastbound on Lakeside Road, a paved county road. Lingenfelter told officers that the truck turned onto the county road and made a u-turn, hesitated and then drove into his path.

Sheriff Andrews said that the accident apparently occurred at about 1:05 p.m., and was discovered by a passing motorist. He said that Mr. Lingenfelter's head struck the windshield of his car and that several minutes passed before either Mr. Lingenfelter or the woman who discovered the accident realized that the truck had gone into the water.

Sheriff Andrews said that the car struck the small pickup truck nearly in the center of the driver's side and that the force of the impact bowled the vehicle over. The truck rolled down a bank and over several sapling trees before coming to rest with only the right rear fender of the truck protruding from the muddy water.

Sheriff Andrews, the first officer in the scene, waded chest deep into the water and pulled the bodies form (sic) the cab of the truck. He estimated, however, that the truck had been in the water for at least 10 minutes before he arrived. County Attorney Philip E. Winter today ordered that autopsies be conducted to determine the cause of each death in each case.

The deaths were the second and third traffic fatalities recorded in Lyon County during 1973, occurring less than 36 hours after a mishap which resulted in the death of 13-year-old Ricky Burden - the first traffic fatality of the year.
