CULLOM - William J. Flessner, 96, of Cullom died at 12:10 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 15, 1998) at OSF Saint James Hospital, Pontiac.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, Cullom. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery, Cullom. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the St. John's Lutheran Church Hall, Cullom. Harris-Martin-Burke Funeral Home, Cullom, has charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church, Cullom, or to Cullom Fire Department Ambulance.

He was born July 18, 1901, in Charlotte Township, Livingston County, a son of William and Ollie Voss Flessner. He married Maude Esther Bitner on Feb. 27, 1924, in Chatsworth. She died Nov. 9, 1945. He then married Helen Louise Austin Busick on Feb. 12, 1959, in Cullom. She survives.

Other survivors include a son, Ronald (Carol) Flessner, rural Chatsworth; a daughter, Dorthymae Coash, Cullom; two stepsons, Richard Busick, Denison, Texas, and Donald Busick, Watseka; a stepdaughter, Frances Slomko, Prescott, Ariz.; a sister, Iva Dehm, Pontiac; a brother, Lowell Flessner, Chatsworth; two grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
The grandchildren are Susan Flessner and Bill Flessner.

He also was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Ina and Mabel Flessner, Olive Ehlers and Millie Attig; three brothers, Everett, Leslie and Clifford Flessner; and a granddaughter.

Mr. Flessner attended Charlotte Township School; Wartburg Academy, Wartburg, Iowa; and North Central Business College, Naperville. He farmed most of his adult life.
He was instrumental in organizing the Charlotte Co-op Grain Co. and the Charlotte Consolidated School. He was a member of Vermillion Valley Shorthorn Breeders Association and the Cullom Junior Fair. He was one of Livingston County's first 4-H leaders.

Mr. Flessner also had served on the Livingston County Board.

He was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Cullom, where he had served on the church council.
