By the 1900 census, Raif was living with Archibald Screws and Alice Sibley Screws, after an epidemic killed his mother and left his father blind. The Screws family loved Raif so much that they "adopted" him and changed his name to Clark Screws. It was never a legal adoption.
Clark, as he was known in Yazoo County, was a station agent for the Illinois Central Railroad in Bentonia. He married the former Thaddie Kirk on September 10, 1916 in Yazoo County, Mississippi, and together they raised five children: Buford Johnson, Bryan Clark, Magdalene Kirk, Carroll Sibley, and John Thomas. Clark had just retired from the railroad, mowed his yard, and relaxed in his favorite chair when he died.
Services were held at Concord Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
The following is from the memoirs of son Bryan:
1906 - Clark rode a mule from Mechanicsburg, MS to Bentonia, MS and was hired as Clerk for the ICRR.
1915 - Thaddie Kirk came to Depot Bentonia in a buggy to meet the evening train for her aunt from New Orleans. There she met Clark.
1916 - Clark and Thaddie were married while he was employed as Clerk. He later made Agent Operator at Anding, MS.
1941 - Buford and Bryan worked Second and Third Operator jobs at Bentonia.
1941 - Bryan and Dorothy Lupo met at Bentonia depot on a blind date.
1942 - Bryan and Dorothy were married and lived in Bentonia, where Bryan was employed as Second Trick Operator.
1955 - Clark retired from the ICRR after 49 1/2 years.
