Clinton, Illinois "Register", Friday, August 19, 1898:
"Saturday morning Isaiah Boone left the home of his son Daniel Boone, in the city, and started to Weldon on foot, going along the railroad. Between Clinton and Lane is a curve and a descent toward Lane, on the east of the curve. As Mr. Boone was walking down the descent the passenger train that leaves Clinton at 8:40 rounded the curve. The engineer saw Mr. Boone, but not until he was near him. He sounded the alarm and Mr. Boone, who was quite deaf, started to leave the track, but the train struck him before he was off the track and threw him several feet. Soon as possible the train backed to the scene of the accident and the injured man was taken on. None of the train men knew Mr. Boone, and they did not learn his name until they reached Lane. A telegram was sent to his son here, and he was taken to Weldon, his former home. While being taken to the hotel at Weldon, his injuries resulted in death. The remains were brought to Clinton Saturday afternoon.
Isaiah Boone was born in Clark Co., KY, Feb.18, 1832, and lived 66 years, 5 months and 15 days. He was a grand-nephew of Daniel Boone, the great Kentucky hunter, whose name is familiar to every school boy. He was married to Sarah E. Barrow in Kentucky. They came to Illinois in 1872, settling on a farm near Weldon. Six children were born to them, one, Janie, dying in 1887. Mrs. Boone died June 21, 1880. The children living are Daniel of this city; C. C. of Mattoon; Mrs. Lucy Rock, of Monticello; Thomas, David, and George, of California.
Mr. Boone continued to live near Weldon until 1893, when he went to Normal where he lived two or three years. When in Normal he united with the M. E. Church. Since then he had lived with his son in Clinton, and frequently walked to Weldon. When he went there he seldom told his son, and it was not until he received word he had been hurt that the son knew he had started to Weldon.
Funeral services were held at the residence of Daniel Boone Saturday at 4 o'clock, conducted by Dr. W. A. Hunter. Interment was in Woodlawn Cemetery."
