Ira was the son of Thomas and Sarah "Sally"(Muir) Boone. On February 10, 1836 he married Elizabeth Liggette in Clark County, Kentucky.

In a double wedding ceremony, Ira Boone married Elizabeth Ligget in Clark County, Kentucky on 10 Feb 1836 and his sister, Harriet Rite Boone (1811-1892) (9127855) married Nelson Scholl (1815-1890), son of Septimus and Sallie (Miller) Scholl also. Nelson was Harriet's 3rd cousin.

Ira was ordained 17 Nov 1860 to preach the gospel at the Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist church.
