Crown Princess of Sicily, Duchess of Swabia, German Queen. Also known by the name Maria. She was the daughter of Isaakios II. Angelos, Emperor of Byzantinum. She was first married to Roger III. of Sicily in June 1193 but he died six months later on December 24. When King Heinrich VI. came to Palermo in 1194 he betrothed her to his brother Philip of Swabia (qv). They were married on May 25. 1197. The couple fell in love and the marriage was very happy. In September 1198 she was crowned Queen in Mainz. Between 1198 and 1206 she gave birth to six children, two boys and four girls. While the boys didn't survive childhood, the girls were in early years engaged into important houses. Three of them became queens and one a duchess. Irene was pregnant again when Philip was murdered by Otto of Wittelsbach in 1208. She retired to the Burg Hohenstaufen where she had a miscarriage and died only two months after her husband.
