Abram Douglas Peebles was the son of Thomas and Janet (Douglas) Peebles. His parents and seven older siblings immigrated from Clarkston, New Monkland Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland about 1851. Abram was born in 1852 in Pottsville, Schuykill Co., PA - the first of their children to be born in the US. They moved to Lonaconing, Allegany Co., MD some time after his birth.

On June 20, 1905, at the First Presbyterian Church in Cumberland, Allegany Co., MD, he married Elizabeth E. Waldie Jackson. The two of them ran a boarding house on Wells Ave. in Roanoke, VA, until Douglas' death in 1912 - then Elizabeth continued to run it on her own until her death sometime after 1932.
