In 1841 Thomas Peebles, Sr., was a 29-year-old coal miner residing on Stanrigg Row in Clarkston, New Monkland Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland, with a wife and two sons. Ten years later the couple emigrated to Pottsville, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, with four sons and three daughters. Their eight child was born in Pottsville in 1853 and the ninth in Lonaconing in 1854. Thomas was a miner for the Georges Creek Coal and Iron Company. He died in 1859 at the age of 47 years.
