Thomas Peebles, Jr., was born on Red Row, Coatbridge, Old Monkland Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland. Like his father, Tom was a coal miner but in 1859 went to California to dig for gold. His 18-year-old brother, David, followed him in 1860. They returned to Lonaconing sometime in 1865. In early 1867 Tom returned to Scotland where he met Mary Fleming. They were married August 25, 1868 in First Presbyterian Church, Lonaconing, by the Reverend W. G. Hillman.
