According to researcher Marianne Matkin, Hardy's son Madison wrote the following about his father, nicknamed "Devil," in a letter dated 25 February 1871:
"Father has not been able to walk for some two weeks from a violent pain in one of his legs. His curseing apparatus appears to be in fine running order...he has a good appetite but it seems that his food instead of going to support his earthly tabernacle is convirted into Dams, God Dams, Hellfire and other little simple phrases of a similar nature."

Hardy's tombstone appears to claim that he died age 92, but the census reports consistently put him at born in 1782 or 1783.

"For eight generations, the Strickland family has made a mark on Old Homosassa"
By Nancy Kennedy, Chronicle Reporter, Jun 18, 2022, Updated Jun 20, 2022.
"In Old Homosassa, the Strickland family goes back eight generations to the 1830s, with the arrival of Hardy "Devil" Strickland.
In 1928, Henry Arthur Strickland, grandson of Hardy "Devil" Strickland, was the town constable in Old Homosassa.
Henry Arthur got into a scuffle with some strongmen and was shot by one of them.
Instead of going to the nearest hospital in Brooksville, Henry Arthur went to his brother Joe's house, got a pistol, went back and shot two of the strongmen, killing one, then later died himself."
