She was baptized a Lutheran and confirmed at the Hamlin Lutheran Church. She attended Hamlin School and later attended the sewing school in Exira, Iowa.
On May 8, 1918 she married John C. Bertlesen at Hamlin. They farmed near Hamlin most of their married life. From 1939 to 1943 he operated a trucking business in viola and they then moved to Hamlin. He died March 26, 1955. On June 12, 1957 she married Mads Hansen. They moved to Audubon where she lived until she became a resident of the Exira Care Center. In January of 1982 she moved to the Friendship Home in Audubon. Mr. Hansen died February 8, 1972. She was a member of the Hamlin Lutheran Church where she was active in the women's work and also cared for the church property in many ways.
She was preceded in death by her 2 husbands; an infant daughter, Kathleen; her parents; 1 sister, Christene Hansen; 3 brothers: Soren, Willads, and Otto Rattenberg; and a step-grandson Steve Jewell.
Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn and Dick Northrup of Audubon; her son and daughter-in-law, Emery and Ardyth Bertelsen, of Hamlin; 7 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 4 step-daughters: Helen, MRs. Harvey Kirk, Exira, IA; Mildred, Mrs. Jim Rogers, of Council Bluffs, IA; Bernice Bro, of Ames, IA; and Kathy, Mrs. Frank Hutchins, of Norwalk, IA; 14 step-grandchildren; 5 sisters: Marie, Mrs. Jerry Lanigan, St. Paul,MN; Agnes Coates, Spearfish, SD; Ella, Mrs. Ted Rasmussen, Audubon, IA; Freda, Mrs. Arlo Alwill, Irwin, IA; and Emma Hansen, Audubon; 1 brother, Herbert Rattenborg, of Hamlin; and 4 sisters-in-law: Ruby Rattenborg, Mayme Lang, Mildred Nissen, and Julia Rattenborg, all of Audubon; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Saturday, Oct 30, 1982, 2:00 P.M., Hamlin, Iowa. Pastor John Emerson, officiated. Organist was Mrs. Ruby Rattenborg. Soloist was Mrs. Robert Medberry. Casket Bearers were John Bertlesen, Richard Hansen, John Kramer, Collin Leist, Donald Merk, and Larry Northrup
