John Frederick Hunter and his wife Dora married in about 1853 in Germany. They emigrated about 1858 with their first two sons, Emil about age 4, and Herman about 1 year old.

Frederick was a cabinet maker.

Frederick's father was said to be first violin with the Kaiser's orchestra in Germany. Many in the Hunter family were very musical. One of their daughters went to Juilliard.

John Frederick Hunter apparently died in Butternut Valley in 1881. The Butternut Valley cemetery was not established until 1882 however, so John F. Hunter may have been buried on his own property if there was no cemetery there yet in the area.
