The 1930 census recorded that he was born in Wisconsin, but earlier census records showed that he was born in Germany and came to America with his parents, Frederick Hunter and Dora Klatt Hunter, and brother Emil.

Herman worked as a railroad engineer. He and his second wife Minnie had two children, Della and Donald H.

From the 1910 census, there were two older children as well, who were children of his first marriage. They were Robert age 23, and Grace age 10. (Minnie only had two children, so the two youngest were hers.)

From the 1900 census, Herman's first wife was found to be named Genevieve, she was Canadian English. She and Herman had 5 children, but only the two were living, Robert and Grace. The family lived in LaCrosse, Wisconsin in 1900. (On Robert's birth record, 30 Oct 1886 in Wells, Faribault, Minn., his mother's name was recorded as Jenny Liddle. Jenny died before 1907.)

Hunter Herman F. 1856 1931

Herman's niece Vallie wrote about him: "He was a very fine fellow."

(This looks like Herman's son, Donald; this says Donald was a Colonel in the US Army in WWII, Korea and Vietnam, and was buried at Arlington:
