Sam was the youngest of nine children of Claud Earl and Elma Gertrude Purdue Addington. He enlisted in the army on 2 Aug 1944 in Louisville, Kentucky. After WWII, he came home to Elizabethtown and later married Georgia "Betty" Sells. They had one child.
