In 1933, at the age of 15, Raymond drove a team of mules hauling a load of the families possessions from Boonville, Indiana to their new home, a farm on St. John Road, in Elizabethtown, KY. This trip, about 110 miles, took him several days, but he persevered, even though he had little food and no one to help him.

Raymond Addington married Alice Rae Nacke on 19 Nov 1938, in Hardin County, KY. They had seven children, the oldest, Phillip, was deceased in 2004, and Brenda Addington Drane died Feb 7, 2016.

The property which Ray and Alice purchased in 1947, later became "Addington Field," the Elizabethtown Airport, which, along with his father, Claud Addington's adjoining farm, was sold in 1976.
