John Abney Boykin, Jr. was the eldest son of John Abney Boykin and the former Miss Julian Perdue. Born November 15th 1910, Jack as he was known by family & friends, grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. He studied pre-law at the University of Georgia and graduated from Emory University with his law degree.

On May 31st 1939, Jack married Edna Joyce Smith, daughter of Wilbur Richard Carroll Smith and the former Mary Edna Pope; with whom he had two daughters.
