Death of John W. Hathaway.

John W. Hathaway of Carmichaels, this county, died at the home of his son-in-law, Prof. A. McGinnis, Waynesburg, Saturday last, Feb. 5, 1887. Deceased was born in April 1821, had always been a resident of Greene county (except a short period of his life which he spent in Indiana) and begin business as a clerk at a store in Newtown at the age of sixteen. At nineteen years of age he went to Carmichaels as a clerk. He was for many years junior partner in the firm of Carson and Hathaway, merchants, afterward buying his partner's interest he became sole owner of the large merchandising establishment there. He was an energetic, careful and thrifty manager of business, always exercising the keenest tact in his ventures and investments, yet conducting the same with a motive of honesty and fair dealing toward all; earning the respect of everybody. Years ago when Carmichaels was the business center of Greene county Mr. Hathaway - added to a continued large retail trade - did considerable business at wholesale. Upon retiring from the mercantile business, at one time he was elected cashier of the People's Bank of Carmichaels, in which capacity he served with great credit to himself and the satisfaction of all those connected with the institution. He was known to the prominent business men of Pittsburg, Philadelphia and other eastern cities.

Several years ago two tumors made their appearance upon one of his limbs, but never gave him any inconvenience until last fall when they developed into a very malignant form. He was under the care of Dr. Gilbert, but gradually grew worse.

The 28th of January he was brought to Waynesburg and treated by Dr. J. W. Ely, who makes a specialty of such diseases, but nothing could be done for him.

He was married in 1846 to Miss Ary Anderson, a cousin of Geo. L. Wyly, Esq., and aunt of Mrs. Lewis Day, this place. A family of ten children were born to them, six of whom, together with Mrs. Hathaway, survive the deceased. The children are: Charles, Samuel, William, Jacob and Lawrence, of Carmichaels; and Mrs. Mary McGinnis, of this place. The family were all present at his bedside when he died.

Mr. Hathaway was well known and was regarded as a man of great business ability, sound judgment and sterling integrity.

He had been a member of the C. P. church for over 45 years and was a ruling elder in that church for 32 years. He was without question a true Christian.

Services were held at the home of Prof. McGinnis, Sabbath morning at 8 o'clock, conducted by Drs. Bushnell and Miller. The funeral left at half-past eight and reached Carmichaels at half-past twelve. At 3 o'clock p.m. services were held in the C. P. church there and a funeral sermon preached by Rev. J. W. McKay.

The remains were interred in the Carmichaels cemetery.
