She was born March 5, 1930 in Sciota, IL the daughter of Maurice "Honk" and Alice Ruebush Arnold. She graduated in 1948 from St. Mary's Academy in Nauvoo. She met her future husband, Berny Ferrill, while waitressing at the Dallas Café. They married on April 27, 1949, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dallas City.
She and Connie Logan started singing together during high school and performed at talent shows. Shirley also babysat for many children in her home. These included Ron and Sandra Tutwiler, Tom and Michael Trout, and many others. She felt special joy in taking care of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Love of music and singing were two great joys in her life. She loved to karaoke and sing for her own enjoyment. For many years she sang for Mass at the Catholic Church in Dallas City. Another pastime enjoyment was playing her organ at home.
Since Berny was a volunteer fireman, she was an active fireman's wife. Answering the fire alarm phone to find out the location of the fire kept her busy. An active member of the Altar and Rosary Society, Shirley made the best pies for bake sales. Her pies were the first to go. She also participated in the Dallas City Ladies American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed stitching and making quilts with her mother.
She entered Oak Lane Nursing Home in February, 2011, She received wonderful care and was loved by the staff.
Shirley is survived by a very special friend, Larry Clark of Dallas City; daughter, Ann Ferden, of Ovid, Michigan; one daughter-in-law Debra Ferrill of Dallas City; one sister, Maureen Stump of Quincy, one brother Joe Arnold of Dallas City; six grandchildren, and six grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Berny in 1986, son Dennis in 2012; brothers Thomas, James, and Jerry Arnold.
