When Joel William Chappell was born on 17 February 1906, in Gatesville, Coryell, Texas, United States, his father, James Monroe Chappell, was 29 and his mother, Sarah Emma Daniell, was 23. There were at least 9 living children of Monroe and Sarah.

Joel had 3 living children with Bobbie Virginia Petree, but his beloved daughter, Jannette, preceded him in death, at age 12 by drowning in Fairfield, Texas. (Janette's re,aoma and grave were later moved to Bradford Cemetery in Troup, Texas .


Joel lived in Bruceville-Eddy, Texas in 1920 and Crawford, 1930, for a time in Fairfield, Texas, moving shortly after their daughter's tragic death to Troup, Texas (near Tyler), where he lived until his death in 1979.

He worked at various jobs over his adult life--for telephone companies and early microwave communication---and Sinclair Oil Company. He died on 4 June 1979, in Troup, Smith, Texas, United States, at the age of 73, and was buried in Bradford Cemetery, Troup, Smith, Texas, United States.
