Hattie's mother, Ernestina F. Zillmer, was born in Germany to Friedrick (Fred) Zillmer and Ernestina Muehlenbeck. Her 1920 census shows that she came to the U.S. in 1879, while her parents' census reports show their arrival either in 1866 (1900 census) or 1869 (1910 census). On June 3, 1879, she married John F. Herbert, (names transcribed in WI marriage index as "Ernestine F. Nilmer" and "Johann F. Herbst").

They raised six children.

John F. Herbert died on April 6, 1896.

On June 27, 1899, in Oshkosh, WI, Ernestina married Henry Tiffany. The newlyweds, Henry and Ernestina, cannot yet be located in the 1900 U.S. census. But Ernestina Tiffany is listed in the Wright's Jefferson directory 1900-1901, p. 325, at 28 Koshkonong, Ft. Atkinson, WI. Henry Tiffany (res 31 Sherman av E), brother George Tiffany (res 23 Barrie), and brother Orlando Tiffany (res 25 Barrie) are listed in Ft. Atkinson directory 1900-1901, p. 192.

In 1900 U.S. census for Koshkonong, Jefferson County, WI, Hattie Herbert 12 and brother George Herbert 14 are in the household of their sister, Rosa Herbert Schmaling (misspelled Schmiting) 17, with Rosa's husband, Herman Schmaling 27. Their sister, Ella Herbert, is shown as "Ella Zillmer 15 (August 1884)" in household of her maternal grandparents, Fred Zillmer 68 & Ernestina Zillmer 71 in Farmington, Jefferson County, WI.

Henry Tiffany and Miss Harriett Herbert, both of Harmony, Wis., were married in Freeport Thursday afternoon by Justice of the Peace W..F. Goddard..

In 1908, Ernestina married Olaf Noren (born December 12, 1859) and in 1910 lived in St. Croix County, WI. Both George Herbert 23 and Frank Herbert 20 were living with their mother and stepfather.

Between 1910 and 1918, Ernestina & Olaf moved to Hobson, Fergus County, MT, where Olaf died in 1918. In 1920, Ernestina was the proprietor of the Judith Hotel. Her household included her son, Frank Herbert, his wife, Esther, and their children, Helen, Robert, and James.

On November 25, 1920, she married Alston S. Mitchell (born in Scotland on November 13, 1866). Ernestina died in Montana on February 24, 1923, with her widower as the administrator of her estate in Judith Basin County, MT. Included in the inventory of the personal property in the "John Cowan cottage" were dishes, "save and except one set of Pink Rose Dishes belonging to Mrs. Frank Herbert."

Ernestina is interred in Koshkonong Cemetery near her first husband, John F. Herbert, son Frank Herbert, and son Henry Amos Tiffany.
