John Levi Billington signed up in 1862, but only for a year. He was with the unit up until they dismounted. John apparently avoided capture at Arkansas Post or was actually able to escape as well. In 1863 he signed up with the 12th Texas Cavalry for a 3 year hitch and participated in the Little Rock Campaign as well as the Red River Campaign.
John married Louise Kimbrough at Kentucky in 1851. When he enlisted, he was 33 years old. He was visiting in the home of a daughter at his death.
He was born at the family farm, south of the current town of Bedford, Tennessee.
