OBITUARY:

"JOE COUCH, VETERAN OF THE CIVIL WAR, DIED IN CHILLICOTHE SATURDAY"

Had Been a Resident of Livingston County for More Than Half a Century

Joe Couch, 67 years old, a veteran of the Civil War, and a resident of Chillicothe for more than fifty years, died Saturday afternoon at the home of his son, Joe Couch, Jr., in Highview of peresis and stomach trouble. He had been ill for several weeks.

Mr. Couch was a native of Tennessee but had resided in Chillicothe since 1860. The latter years of his life were devoted to farming. He had a wide acquaintance in Livingston County.
Besides the widow, Mr. Couch is survived by the following children: Clarence, Sam and Ed. Couch of Kansas City, Park and Joe Couch of Chillicothe, James Couch of Arkansas, Albert Couch of Seattle, and Mrs. Peter Wood {sic} of Chillicothe. A brother lives in Quincy.

Funeral services were held from the house this (Monday) morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by the pastor of the First Baptist Church, and interment made in Edgewood."

He was known in various printed records as "Joseph," "Joel," and "Joe" - his name in the Family Bible is given as "Joel Alexander Couch" and a letter from his sister, Hannah, in the early 1870's shows his name as "Joe"...

Joel's parents were John Couch (known to many researchers as "John Couch III"), born in 1819 in Greene County, Tennessee and Elizabeth (Smith) Couch, born 1816 in Greene County, Tennessee. Where and when John & Elizabeth passed away is currently unknown to any researchers of this family.
