Last whereabouts known for John Couch was Cotton Plant, Arkansas (Monroe County), when he wrote a letter home to his wife after the Civil War. He and one son, Samuel Couch, fought in the 3rd Missouri Infantry (CSA), Company H. Samuel died at the battle of Alatoona Pass, Georgia, October 05, 1864. John wrote a letter from Memphis, Tennessee to his brother-in-law, Adam Wattenbarger Oct 18, 1865 and one to his wife from Cotton Plant, Arkansas on November 13, 1867. There is some evidence he died in Pulaski County, Arkansas in early 1870, but this is very speculative.

Furthermore, I found a John Couch, born in Tennessee in about 1819 near Cotton Plant, Arkansas (from which his last known letter was written home in 1867) in the 1870 Census, with a "wife" of Ann Couch, born about 1835 in South Carolina, with her children (last name of "Carrom" all born in North Carolina) from a previous marriage. There is also a potentially matching John Couch & "Mary Ann Couch" (she was born about 1835 in North Carolina) in Bedford County, Tennessee in the 1880 Census. John's wife Elizabeth (Smith) Couch was definitely still living at the time of the 1870 Census, and possibly at the time of the 1880 Census, so if (Mary) Ann Couch in Arkansas in 1870 was really John's wife, he may have been engaged in bigamy (and IF this IS "my" John Couch).

Son of John Couch, Jr. & Eleanor (Nellie) West Couch of Greene County, Tennessee.
