CHARLES MERRITT BLANKENSHIP SR.

Charles Merritt Blankenship Sr., 71, died Dec. 20, 1997, in Florence. He was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Florence to Enos M. and Adelaide F. (Wilson) Blankenship.
Mr. Blankenship was a retired rural mail carrier and a member of the First United Presbyterian Church. He also was a member of the Florence Elks Lodge No. 611, Fremont Lodge No. 97, AF&AM, past master of the Masonic lodge, past commander of the American Legion Post No. 25, former Florence Cubmaster; former Elder of his church and the VFW Post No. 4061.
He graduated from Florence High School and was drafted into the service during World War II where he served in the 5th Infantry Division. He was wounded in combat and discharged from the Army in 1946 with a Purple Heart, two battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation.
Mr. Blankenship was active in community affairs. He was a member of the Florence Volunteer Fire Department from 1948 to 1973. He served as district chief for 8 years and president of the local fire department and assistant chief for 4 years. He was a member of the state firemen's association and the Southeastern Firemen's Association.
He helped to form the Florence Fire Protection District Board and served on the board for 36 years. He is the past president of the Florence Pioneer Day Association and a member of that group for 10 years.
His passion was the fire department and children, especially if he would see one in need. For instance, if he would hear of a child who needed glasses, he would contact the Lions Club to make sure that child received glasses. He could never stand to see a child or animal mistreated.
On Sept. 7, 1975, in Florence, he was married to Shirley J. Pelc.
Mr. Blankenship is survived by his wife; children: four children and three step-children; brother John (Lee) Blankenship; sisters: Madeline Sudo, Jessie Gusenti (sic), Eleanore Rogers, numerous nieces and nephews; one sister-in-law, four brothers-in-law, grand children and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Laura Price; a brother, George; three infant daughters; a grandson, James A. McGinnis; and in-laws Alice and Ralph King.
Services will be 2 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at the Florence Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Lowell Gray officiating. Interment in Union Highland Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Sangre de Cristo Hospice West or Florence Volunteer Fire Dept.
