Freddie Shanklin Killed in Car Crash Early Monday Morning

Freddie Layne Shanklin, age 20, was killed Monday at 1:30 a.m. when the car he was driving left Highway 88 near Alamo and crashed into a tree. He was alone.

Authorities said Mr. Shanklin had left Dresden after visiting his parents, Neil and Lula Mae Shanklin, near midnight and was driving toward Memphis. He was an employee of Sears, Roebuck and Co. Police said the accident apparently occurred when he went to sleep at the wheel.

Services were at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Dresden. The Rev. Keith Wooster, pastor, and the Rev. Bobby Agee of Louisville, KY., officiated. Burial was in New Hope Cemetery with Jones Funeral Home of Martin in charge. The body was at Bowlin Funeral Home until time for the services.

Pallbearers were Gerald Nanney, Wayne Moore, Jimmy Rauchle, Jimmy Melton, Henry Ray, and David Anderson.

Mr. Shankin graduated from Dresden High School in 1962, where he was an outstanding football player. He was a Baptist.

He is survived by his parents, Neil Shanklin and Lula Mae Hutcherson Shanklin, two brothers, James Barton Shanklin and Frank Asa Shanklin, all of Dresden; his maternal grandmother, Onie Maye Hutcherson of Dresden, and his paternal grandfather, Irvin Allen Shanklin of Latham.
