Dr. James Barton Shanklin age 64, of Macomb, IL., formerly of Latham, TN., died Sunday, October 25, 2015 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. Funeral services for Mr. Shanklin will be on Friday, October 30, 2015 at 2:00 PM at New Hope Baptist Church near Latham with burial to immediately follow in New Hope Church Cemetery. Friends may call at Bowlin Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM and on Friday the body will lie in state at New Hope Baptist Church from 11:00 AM until service time at 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations to honor Bart's memory can be made to the New Hope Cemetery Association, c/o Kenneth Rogers, 117 Walker Road, Dresden, TN 38225.

Life Story for Dr. James Shanklin

MACOMB, IL -- Bart Shanklin, 64, director of the Western Illinois University School of Music, passed away Oct. 25 in Iowa City, IA.

"The Western Illinois University community mourns Dr. Shanklin's death," said President Jack Thomas. "We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends."

Shanklin had served as the director of the School of Music since July 2005. He was named the school's first director upon the renaming of the department to the School of Music. Prior to joining the WIU College of Fine Arts and Communication, Shanklin taught at Southern Utah University for 15 years and had served as music department chair there since 1992. Previously he was choral director and an assistant professor of music at the University of Arkansas at Monticello and Blue Mountain (MS) College. He also has taught at the high school level and has served as a minister of music.

Shanklin directed Western's comprehensive curriculum with bachelor degree programs in applied music, including instrumental performance, vocal performance, jazz studies and composition; as well as in music education, music therapy and music business and graduate programs.

Shanklin, who often served as a guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator, was an active member of NASM and served as a visiting accreditation evaluator for this national accrediting organization. He had also served as an adjudicator of NATS competitions and singing artists auditions, as well as for numerous public school vocal solo competitions.

Choirs under Shanklin's direction received critical acclaim in concert tours throughout the U.S., Canada and England, where they performed at Cambridge University, the University of Warwick and St. Clement Danes Church in London.

Shanklin earned a bachelor of music degree in music education from Union University, Jackson, TN; a master of music degree in voice performance from Florida State University; and a doctor of musical arts in choral conducting from Arizona State University. He had additional graduate work at the University of Illinois.
Dr. Shanklin was the son of the late Neil and Lula Mae Hutcherson Shanklin. He was also preceded in death by a brother Freddie Layne Shanklin. He is survived by his younger brother, Frank Asa (Dianne) Shanklin of Dresden, his nephew, Steven Neil (Michelle) Shanklin, two great nieces, Alexis Grace and Sydney Claire Shanklin, and one great nephew, Andrew Asa "Drew" Shanklin.
