Ada Elizabeth or Lizzie as she liked to be called was the daughter of William and Ellen Flannery. She was born on the family farm, 7 miles outside of Bozeman, MT in 1874.
She was one of 10 children and 7 daughters. She lived on the family farm most of her life, and when one of her youngest sisters came of school age, the family moved into the town of Bozeman proper to have her closer to the family's schools.

She attended one year of advanced learning at Montana Agricultural College and was part of the Cliolion Literary Society. The family has a group picture of her taken around 1896/97 with her sister Anne and the club members.

She left college to marry Joseph Friel of Idaho, a local miner on 14 Nov 1897. He had lost 2 brothers in mining accidents, one just being around 11 years old. Lizzie's parents were of course concerned when she made the announcement.

Joseph and Lizzie lived in Helena and surrounding mining camp areas when they first married. They had 6 children. One boy Hugh, born in 1899, died in infancy. The other children were Isabel (1898-1933), Josephine (1901-2001), Agnes (1903-1969), Joseph "Arnold" (1907-1978) and Richard (1910-1980).

In 1909 the family moved to Lewistown, MT and Joseph worked on the police force there. In 1914, during the opening days of WWI, he enlisted in the Army Corp of Engineers and was sent oversees until 1919. Lizzie and her young children, at that time, moved down to So CA to live with her siblings and winter vacationing parents there. In the summer of 1915, her parents brought Lizzie and children back to Bozeman, MT and she lived near her parents there. In 1920 when her parents moved down to So CA permanently, Lizzie and her children moved into their Bozeman home.

Joseph died in 1927. After this time, Lizzie would live for a time with each her children in various locations. At the time of her death, she was living in Helena with her son Arnold and his family. Arnold and his wife Mary owned the successful Friel China and Gift Shop there in Helena.

Lizzie enjoyed living with them and helping with the preparations for entertaining the many friends and family throughout the year. And most especially, she enjoyed taking care of her granddaughter, Mary Arnold.

The night before her death, she helped prepare the meal and sat at the table with the family afterwards, talking about the upcoming Easter Sunday. They were preparing to celebrate with a big holiday meal and a large group of people were invited. Lizzie became suddenly ill later that night, and died the next day.

Lizzie was a member of St Helena's Cathedral Catholic Church and would walk to Mass almost every day. She was a member of a bridge club and loved to play cards.
