George was driving one of those handcars on a train track with two other boys. It was dark and they did not see in time that a horse had wandered onto the tracks and hit it. They were all thrown from the car. The other two survived, but George died Monday 22 Sep 1911 at the age of 19.

A tall, four-sided stone in the Metzger Plat at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Charleston, Mississippi, Missouri is marked with name of one child on each side. They are George Henry, Oleva May, Barbara Grace, and Lucy Ollie Metzger, brother and sisters.
