John Thompson Montgomery was the 4th of four sons born to David and Martha [née Thompson] Montgomery. He married Miss Mary Anne Dunlap in 1843; with whom he had the following known children:
Mary Elmira {m. Carter}(1847-1911)
William Henry (1850-1882)
John Pressly (1856-1910)
Martha Emma {m. Fly}(1858-1948)

John T. Montgomery served in the Eighth Texas Infantry battalion of the Confederate States Army; known as Hobby's Eighth Texas Infantry regiment due to its organizer, Alfred M. Hobby in May 1862. John rose to the rank of Major.

In the 1870s, Major John Montgomery recognized the need for improved grasses for pasturage. He imported and sold a new grass from Africa, Sorghum halapense, commonly known as “Johnson grass,” a legacy that grows in Wilson County to this day.
