COLUMBIA - Alva Ray Ballentine died Sunday, August 5, 2012. A son of the late Malcolm Augustus Ballentine and the late Mattie Louise Koon Ballentine, he was born February 19, 1931 in Irmo.

He graduated from Irmo High School as valedictorian and recipient of the Reader's Digest Award. He earned a BS degree in chemistry magna cum laude, MS and PhD degrees in chemistry from the University of South Carolina and also did graduate study at Emory University.

Dr. Ballentine was an assistant professor of chemistry at Presbyterian College in Clinton before joining the faculty at the Citadel from which he retired as professor of chemistry and colonel after 37 years of teaching. He was named emeritus professor at retirement. Dr. Ballentine served terms as secretary-treasurer and chairman of the South Carolina Section of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

He was a member of Pi Alpha, a society for chemistry graduate students at Emory University; Sigma Xi, a national society devoted to scientific research and Phi Beta Kappa.

He received the Harper Award as the most outstanding senior chemistry major at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Ballentine received the Daniel and Medbery Awards for distinguished teaching of chemistry at the Citadel.

During his teaching career, he was a member of the S.C. Academy of Science and ACS. His name was listed in "American Men of Science." Dr. Ballentine was the co-author of several research papers which were published in a principal chemical journal.

While living in Charleston, he was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday School for many years. At retirement, he became a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Irmo.

He is survived by a brother, Charles W. Ballentine Sr. (Ann); a sister, Margaret Ballentine Coogler, both of Irmo; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by brothers, John A. Ballentine, Bernard C. Ballentine, James M. Ballentine Sr. and George O. Ballentine.

Graveside service will be private. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Irmo. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family.
