The Anthon Herald, 28 April 1937 (under Smithland Sun, last page): George Carney, son of William and Mary Carney, was born in Glens Falls, New York, April 26, 1855, and died at Rock Branch April 23, 1937, lacking but three days of reaching his 82nd birthday. When twenty months old he came with his parents to Hanchetville, Wisconsin, moving to Applington, Iowa, when nine years old. In 1878 he moved to Osceola Co., Iowa, where two years later he married Miss Nellie Stevens. To this union four children were born, three dying in infancy and one daughter, Mrs. Edna Griep, surviving. His wife died in 1890. On December 29, 1892, he married Miss Anna Arnold and to them one daughter, Mrs. Ila Burkley, was born. Four sisters preceded him in death and one sister, Mrs. Susie Tillmon of Clarion, Iowa, and one brother, James Carney of Broadview, Montana, survive as do his two daughters, Mrs. Edna Griep of Correctionville and Mrs. Ila Burkley of Broadview, Montana, and his wife. For many years he was a salesman for farm implements, covering all northwest Iowa and for many years before coming to Woodbury County he was in business in Montana. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Rock Branch church under supervision of Stiles Undertaking Services with Rev. Garner Osborn officiating. Burial was in the Rock Branch Cemetery.
