William Carney died July 28, 1924, at the home of his daughter. Mrs. A. G. Tillman of this city, where he had lived for the past seven years.
Mr. Carney was born June 6. 1827, near Montreal, Canada, coming to the states when a young man in the employ of a ship on the St. Lawrence river. In 1849, he was married to Miss Mary Shannahan at Saratoga Springs. N. Y., where they resided until coming to Madison, Wis., in 1855. Here they engaged in farming until 1868 when they moved their family by ox team to Grundy county, Iowa, coming through Chicago when it was but a village. In 1882 they moved to Osceola county where they resided until the death of Mrs. Carney at Ocheyedan in 1892. Since that time he has made his home with his children.

Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Carney all of whom are living except Mrs. Harvey Nash who died in January 1916. The other children are Mrs. D. W. Clayton. Mrs. 0. J. Gillis, Sibley. Iowa; Mrs. Ed. Van Sky and Jas. Carney, Broadview, Mont., Geo. Carney, Moville, Iowa, and Mrs. A. G. Tillman, Clarion. Besides his children he leaves thirty-two grandchildren and forty-seven great grandchildren, many of whom were present at his funeral. Mr. Carney possessed a keen sense of humor and it was this together with his ability to look upon the bright side of life that won him many friends wherever he went and which made it easier for his loved ones to care for him during his decline in health.

Born about 1822-27 in Quebec Canada. In 1850 he married Mary Shanahan in Potsdam New York. About 1856-57 the family moved to Hanchetville, Wisconsin, and in 1864 to Applington, Iowa
