Minnie Bell Springsteen was born in Canada in 1882. Her family settled in the North Branch area when she was 4 months old. Before she reached her first birthday, five brothers and sisters died from diphtheria. Mrs. Butterfield recalled her frustration as a schoolgirl trying to absorb her lessons. "It was hard for me to learn, but there was nobody to help me. My Mother was hard of hearing and my Father had almost no education."
She married Robert Knox of North Branch in 1900 and moved to his farm. They had 6 sons and 1 daughter. Mr. Knox died in 1941. She then married Herbert Butterfield in 1958 and moved to Lake Orion. He died in 1976.

She passed away at the age of 103.
