Captain James Cates, who served on Vancouver harbor tugs nearly 40 years, died Tues, Oct 10, 1967, in Lions Gate Hospital after a long illness. Captain Cates, 58, was vice-president of C.H. Cates & Sons Tugs Ltd., the pioneer harbor towing firm founded by his father, which he joined as a deckhand at the age of 16. North Vancouver's Mayor Carrie Cates is a sister-in-law. Born in North Vancouver, Captain Cates shared his family's interest in politics and community affairs. He was an Alderman in North Vancouver in 1964 before ill health forced him to resign. From that time he worked in the office of the company. His surviving brother, Capt. John Cates, is a former North Van MLA and one-time provincial minister of labor. Capt. Charlie Cates, another brother, who died several years ago, was a North Vancouver mayor and alderman. Besides his widow, Helen, at the family residence at 223 W 26th, Capt. Cates leaves a son, Jim, a daughter, Mrs. Robin Heiliger, both of North Vancouver, and 7 grandchildren.
