Northfield News, Nov. 9, 1979: William Parker Bierman, 66, died at St. Marys Hospital, Minneapolis, on Thursday, Nov. 8,1979. He had been in ill health for several years, critically ill at times, but had always before been able to rally and return to an active life. He was seriously ill again only recently.

He was comparatively well when he and his wife observed their 40th wedding anniversary in July, all of their children and grandchildren being present.

He was born in Northfield on October 31,1913, the son of Bessie (Parker) and Arthur W. Bierman. He grew up here, graduated from Northfield High School and attended Carleton College. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in mortuary science. Directly out of school, he joined the firm, Biermans, Inc., home furnishings store and funeral home, that had been established by his father, Arthur W. Bierman, and two uncles, John L. and Charles A. Bierman in 1906. William Bierman joined the business when he was very young. His brother John later came into the firm and eventually bought Williams interest in 1975.

Bierman married Imogene (Jane) Little in the Cathedral of Our Merciful Savior at Faribault on July 23,1939, and they lived in Northfield during their entire marriage life. For many years, they lived in a house now removed from the corner of Washington at Eighth.

Later they lived for several years in what had been his parental home at 712 Washington. About three years ago, they moved to a Riverview Manor apartment at 500 West Woodley.

He served as a member of the Northfield city council in two different periods of time, part of the time as alderman from the second ward (1956-1960) and the rest of the time (1969-1975) as a councilman- at-large. Bierman twice served as president of the Northfield Jaycees and also held the office of regional vice-president of the Minnesota Jaycees. He served on the board of the Northfield Area Chamber of Commerce. In 1969 he was appointed by the Rice county board of commissioners to the board of directors of the Mineral Springs sanitorium at Cannon Falls. He was a member of Masonic orders, the Odd Fellows lodge, the Northfield golf club, and All Saints Episcopal church.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Dr. Thomas A. Bierman of Little Rock, Ark., and William P. Bierman, Jr., U.S. Navy, retired, of Norfolk, Va.; four grandchildren; the brother, John, and a sister, Miss Arvilla Bierman, both of Northfield.

The funeral service was held Monday, Nov.12, at 11:00 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal church. The Rev. Donald Field, who retired during the summer from being rector of All Saints, returned to Northfield from Carefree, Ariz., to preside at the funeral service. Mrs. Field accompanied him to Northfield, the couple making the trip by auto. Burial was in Oaklawn cemetery.
