Funeral services for Arthur W. Bierman, a prominent business man of Northfield, who celebrated his 50th business anniversary in Northfield on April 17, 1956, who passed away at the Northfield hospital Saturday, June 23, following an extended illness, were held Wednesday afternoon at All Saint's Episcopal church. The Rev. V. E. Pinkham, pastor, officiated at 2 p.m. Henry Woodward was organist and Harold Roach of Faribault was soloist. Uniformed members of the Faribault Commandery No. 8, Knights Templar, served as honor guard at the services held in Oaklawn Cemetery. The Rev. Thorlief Harberg, pastor of the Moravian church and a near neighbor of the Bierman family home was in charge of the committal service. Pallbearers were Donald MacKenzie, G. G. Grunert, Stanley Miller, Walter S. Hughes, Jr., Fay Larkin, and Raymond Howie. Arthur W. Bierman was born Oct. 14, 1872, at the family farm near Dennison, the son of William and Augusta Prehn Bierman. He spent his youth on the farm, attending the nearby school. He began his business career in Northfield when as a young man he opened a notions shop called the Novelty Cash store in the building now occupied by the Quality Bakery. He then was employed in the hardware store owned by his brothers, John L. and Charles A. Bierman, and returned to his farm home for a short time. In 1906 he joined his brothers in establishing a furniture and undertaking business in the building now occupied by Bob's Shoe store. Mr. Bierman took his training in embalming at Superior, Wis. After the death of John Bierman in 1912, Mr. Bierman became sole owner of the business which was for many years in the building now occupied by the G. G. Grunert Hardware. In 1941 he moved the business into the store it is now located in at the corner of Division and Fifth streets which he had purchased several years before. He constructed the 50 foot addition to the building for a modern funeral chapel. In recent years Mr. Bierman has been assisted in the operation of the business by his two sons, William and John. Mrs. Bierman also has been active in the management of the store for some time. He was a member of Social Lodge No. 48, A. F. and A. M.; Corinthian Chapter No. 63 RAM; Northfield Council No. 12 R and S.M.; Faribault Commandry No. 8 KT and Osman Shrine, St. Paul. He was a charter member of the Northfield Rotary club and served as president in 1945. For nine years he was a member of the Northfield city council until 1935. He also served as warden, vestryman and treasurer of All Saint's Episcopal church. He is survived by his widow, the former Bessie Parker to whom he was married on Aug. 21, 1912; two sons, William and John; and one daughter, Arvilla; eight grandchildren; one brother, C. A. Bierman of Minneapolis; two sisters, Mrs. W. E. Budd (Jenny) of St. Louis Park, and Mrs. Herman Roberts (Mattie) of Seattle, Wash.
